NAOS - Nasmyth Adaptive Optics System

Gallery: Saturne

H and Ks 20s & 24s 54mas/pix seeing 1’’ servo on Thetys

Saturn observation highlights the capability of NAOS to close the loop on a moving reference without degrading the sharpness of the observed object.

On the upper picture, taken at 2 different wavelengths (so successively), Thetys was used for wavefront sensing. To freeze the planet motion, the NAOS field selector had previously been given trajectory of the Thetys image in the visible, relative to the planet. A correction was made every 5 seconds. As shown on this IR imace, on which Thetys is also visible (small and zoomed area), the image of Saturn is perfectly sharp, while the Thetys image, of course, is blurred by the relative motion.

This example is also a good example of a combination of the corrections that NAOS can routinely provide: refraction, tracking, flexures.
