Types of research

  • Separated flows
  • Drag reduction mechanisms
  • Wakes
  • Development of optical methods

Characteristics

  • Tunnel A:
    • Vertical test section, 1 m long, section 140 x 140 mm2, with four windows of shadowgraph and interferometer quality in two directions of visualization. The visualization field measures 400 x 100 mm2
    • The flow is gravity-driven and regulated to a given rate by a servo system
    • In continuous mode, the flow rate range is from 0 to 120 liters/minute, with an accuracy of 0.5 %
    • Maximum velocity: 10 cm/s
  • Tunnel B:
    • Vertical test section, 1 m long, section 300 x 300 mm2, with four windows of shadowgraph and interferometer quality in two directions of visualization. The visualizable field is 800 x 300 mm2
    • The flow is regulated to a given rate by a servo system
    • Maximum velocity: 1 m/s

Equipment, measurement, visualization

  • Two Onera/IMFL shadowgraph-interferometers using two continuous 150 W Xenon sources
  • Two stroboscopes with frequencies adjustable from 0 to 500 Hz, flash time 17 ms, flash energy 0.5 joules
  • Two Sony video systems (3-CCD 325P camera, Umatic SP9600P VCR, PVM 2130 monitor)
  • Lasers: four-cavity ruby laser, argon laser, dye laser, helium neon laser
  • Laser Doppler velocimetry, holographic velocimetry
  • Shadowgraph associated with thermal marking technique
  • Dye emission visualization (ribbons, sheets)
  • Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)
