System Design and Performance Evaluation
Missions
To promote and maximize synergy and complementarities between the different scientific and technical disciplines exercised at Onera. Because it plays a transversal role, the DCPS is able, quite naturally, to take on the management of multi-disciplinary projects. It can, in addition, contribute its own skills and knowledge in specific technical fields (system design, optimization, estimation, navigation, guidance, control, etc.)
Areas of Expertise
Boasting more than 90 engineers, the DCPS applies its expertise in many different areas of application, both civil and military (aircraft, missiles, drones, surveillance and defence systems, etc). To assist the projects that it runs, the DCPS develops and implements numerical tools for the analysis, conception and optimization of system performances.
The activities of the department are organised along four strategic domains:
- Methods for design and performance evaluation of aerospace systems
This field is the department's “core discipline” and encompasses the essential activities aimed at equipping it with the methodological tools needed for its mission.
- New aerospace vehicles
The department deals with a large variety of aeronautic and space applications. However, three major themes underlie its work: high-speed air-breathing propulsion, new civil airplanes and drones.
- Survey, tracking and defence systems
This work is concentrated on two major themes for which the department is a renowned expert: space surveillance and ballistic missile defence
- Air traffic systems
This activity is carried out almost entirely as part of European research projects.
The DCPS has been created on 1 January 2011 after the separation of the “Centre de la Prospective Aérospatiale” (Aerospace Technological Prospective) (CPA) from the Long-Term Design and Systems Integration (DPRS). The CPA became on 1 January 2011 the DPRA (aAerospace Technological Prospective Department).
