SALAMMBO - 4D
3D Numerical Model for the Study of the Charged Particle Transport in the Earth's Magnetosphere

Objectives

  • Determination of the particle fluxes and their dynamics in the Earth’s internal magnetosphere for the problems of spacecraft anomalies linked to the radiation environment:
    • internal charging and discharges
    • single event effects
    • total dose effects

Characteristics

  • Particles: protons (1 keV-100 MeV) electrons (50 keV-10 MeV)
  • Model: 4D in the phase space (spatially 3D)
  • Magnetic field model: eccentric tilted dipole
  • Spatial resolution: between 500 km and 3 000 km
  • Temporal resolution: 1 minute
  • Calculation boundaries: altitude range 100 km - 40 000 km
  • Maximum computation time: ~ 1 day

Physical Phenomena taken into Account

  • Radial transport by magnetic and electric field fluctuations
  • Azimuth transport by magnetic and electric drifts
  • Friction process by the thermospheric atoms and molecules
  • Coulomb interactions with free and bounded electrons
  • Wave-particle interactions (plasmapheric hiss, whistlers, VLF)
  • Charge exchange phenomenon

Funding

  • Centre National d'Etudes et de Recherches Aérospatiales (ONERA)
  • Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES)
  • Délégation Générale de l’Armement
