SAMBA
Facility for Balloons Material or Equipment Testiong in Stratospheric Environment

Objectives
- Studies during a simulated flight of the behaviour of balloon materials, especially mechanical properties, gas permeability, thermo-optical coefficients
- Instruments or equipments qualification for earth or planetary missions
- Study of aging mechanisms of materials, films and adhesives, submitted to the specific environment of the mission
Main Features
-
Pressure: 1 to 1000 hPa
-
Aerostatic gas overpressure: up to 500 hPa
-
Temperature: -80 to +20° C
-
Chemical composition depending on the planet simulated, ozone production for earth atmosphere simulation
-
Solar spectrum at the simulated altitude achieved by a Xenon lamp and filters, irradiation intensity up to 1,5 sun equivalent: irradiated area: 250 mm diameter
Examples of Use
- Tropospheric or stratospheric earth balloons for scientific missions
- Planetary missions projects: Venus (Venera, Vega), Mars (Aerostat for the Mars 94-96 project and Mars Together mission),Titan (ACP experiment of the NASA-ESA Cassini-Huygens mission)
Funding
- Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES)
