Physics and Instrumentation

Facilities

All the department's activities are based on not only the theoretical and technical know-how of its teams but also the technologies selected and developed with experimental production and characterization resources essential for the work.

The current resources are:

Mechanical and micro-mechanical engineering

  • mechanical engineering CAD/CAM software: two Catia workstations, two Autocad workstations
  • micro-mechanical engineering laboratory with:
    • traditional machining tools, lathes, milling machines, grinding machines, and also special ones, ultrasonic machining machine, grinding tools...
    • metrology and inspection tools, feelers, capacitance meters, profile meters, interferometers...
  • pumping machines for primary or secondary vacuums, vacuum chambers, turbo-molecular, diffusion and ion pumps
  • two cryostats for experiments at the temperature of liquid nitrogen or hydrogen
  • white room and clean rooms with hoods with horizontal blowers (100 class), specific cleaning benches, including cleaning by ultrasonic agitation or with liquid nitrogen

Micro-machining and deposition

  • micro-lithography bench
  • two benches for the deposition of materials by cathodic spraying under vacuum or in a controlled atmosphere
  • micro-welding stations
  • laboratory for the micro-machining of quartz

Electronics

  • analog electronics laboratory with:
    • reference sources, signal generators, oscilloscopes, voltmeters, ammeters, high precision capacitance meters
    • low frequency (up to 64.10-6 Hz) and high frequency (up to 100 kHz) spectrum analyzers
    • components, cards, spatial wiring
    • multi-layer embedding software and Spice simulation software
  • digital electronics laboratory with:
    • logical states analyzer
    • multi-layer embedding software and simulation software
    • DSP emulation software
    • 3D interferometer for locating electrical activity in clouds, with the associated electronics and data acquisition system
    • broadband network analyzers (10 Hz - 4 GHz)
    • automatic fast measurement acquisition system: 4 channels, 50 MHz, 12 bits

Optical

  • four laser test benches with colorings
  • laser test bench (YAG) for calibrating thermal flow meters
  • two DRASC (coherent Rahman anti-Stokes diffusion) benches
  • two laser test benches for cold atoms instrumentation (Caesium and Rubidium)
  • Optical characterization resources:
    • o sigma-meters
    • cooled CCD camera
    • IR laser diode spectrometer
    • monomode 4 microns OPO
    • high power OPO (1mJ, 3-5 microns)

Instrumentation and tests

  • tests equipment for inertial sensors:
    • turnover table under g for accelerometer tests (1 arc second)
    • test benches uncoupled from seismic vibrations (1/10000 arc second)
    • turning table for gyrometer tests
    • thermal chambers, vibrators, surface plates
  • B61vacuum vessel for tests of electric propulsion units:
    • cryogenic pumping
    • associated electronic equipment (gauges, mass spectrometer, camera, power supplies and connectors...)
    • two thrust balances, 10mN-10 µN and 100 µN-0.1 µN scales
  • one optical test bench for metrology by induced fluorescence (tunable laser diode)
  • vacuum vessel for FEEP propulsion unit tests

Computing equipment and software

  • many computing resources, Unix workstations and PCs with scientific and office automation libraries,
  • finite element modeling software for thermal and mechanical engineering (Samcef),
  • automatic simulation software (Mathlab and Mathcad),
  • specific filtering software,
  • specific 3D electrical field calculation software,
  • specific 2D calculation software for the deposition of ice on wings,
  • specific 3D software (medium and large scale) for the transport and chemistry of effluents in the atmosphere,
  • specific software for the analysis of lightning conditions
