Long-Term Design and Systems Integration

Missions

To promote and maximize synergy and complementarities between the different scientific and technical disciplines exercised at Onera. Because it plays a transversal role, the DPRS is able, quite naturally, to take on the management of multi-disciplinary projects. It can, in addition, contribute its own skills and knowledge in specific technical fields (system design, optimization, estimation, navigation, guidance, control…)

Areas of Expertise

Boasting 50 engineers, the DPRS applies its expertise in many different areas of application, both civil and military (aircraft, missiles, drones, surveillance and defense systems, ...). To assist the projects that it runs, the DPRS develops and implements numerical tools for the analysis and optimization of system performances. The department’s activities are organized into four strategic areas:

The work carried out within the department (system design, performance evaluation, global audits) is synthesized with that delegated to other departments (specialized studies, audits, testing).

  • Performance of aerospace systems
This field is the department's “core discipline” and encompasses the essential activities aimed at equipping it with the methodological tools needed for its mission.
  • New concepts for aerospace vehicles.
The department deals with a large variety of aeronautic and space applications. However, two major themes underlie its work: high-speed air-breathing propulsion and drones.
  • Monitoring, tracking and defense systems
This work is concentrated on two major themes for which the department is a renowned expert: space surveillance and Extended Air Defense
  • Civil aviation and air traffic
This is organized around two distinct but complementary themes (“Future Air Transport” and “New concepts”) and is carried out almost entirely as part of European research projects.

Since 2005 the DPRS has hosted the “Centre de la Prospective Aérospatiale” (Future Prospects in Aerospace Center) (CPA). The objective of the CPA is to carry out multi-disciplinary studies of future prospects, organizing workgroups which regularly bring together Onera engineers from the different departments.

Projects

Among the projects managed by the DPRS, recent or on-going:

International coopération

UAVNET
Unmanned Air Vehicules for Civilian Purposes

CAPECON
Critical Technology (CT) EC Program to investigate new directions for future civil UAV development, applications, technologies, configurations and economic viability

USICO
Critical Technology (CT) EC program to improve the safety of civil UAVs and enable their integration within civilian airspace.

INOUI
The INOUI objective, as part European R&D community, is to contribute for the solution of UAS integration in the 2020 Air Traffic Management system, especially the SES implementation programm SESAR.
