Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS)

An example of direct numerical simulation:
Transport aircraft wake vortices.

To simulate complex aerodynamic phenomena like turbulence numerically, one solution is to solve the Navier-Stokes equations on a fine grid without recourse to any model. The limitations are then of a technical order, i.e. computer memory capacity limits the number of discretization points and consequently the Reynolds number of the application considered.
