Moscow, September 19, 2001

We have the pleasure to announce the creation of the European Hypersonics Association (EHA) on the occasion of its first meeting held in CIAM, Moscow, on September 18&19, 2001. EHA is a non-government and non-profit organisation composed of prominent scientists and specialists in the field of aerogasdynamics for hypersonic flows from Academia, Research Institutions and Agencies in Europe and Russia.

The objective of the organisation is to:

  • assess the level of European hypersonics research;
  • promote hypersonic re-entry technologies and the development of hypersonic ramjet/scramjet-powered flight vehicles;
  • advise governmental and funding agencies;
  • set up and maintain a communication network between Universities, Research Establishment and Industries to promote visibility and exchange of data on critical design points;
  • review the state of the art in hypersonics technologies by assessing the level of:
    • wind tunnel and associated instrumentation capabilities;
    • numerical and physical modelling capabilities;
    • in flight demonstration tests and associated instrumentation capabilities
  • recommend activities to improve "tools for design" covering the 3 key activities of Computational Fluid Dynamics, Wind Tunnel Testing and Flight Testing ;
  • propose test cases for R&D activities aiming at the reduction of "flight critical" design points uncertainties;
  • recommend proposals for short and long term initiatives and identify key priorities;
  • evaluate, on a yearly basis, progress achieved and recommend future activities;
  • stimulate education and training, the exchange of scientists, and advise PhD students.

Membership is limited to representatives of those organisations with hypersonic design and research capability and currently conducting hypersonics research on a significant scale,. Scientists and engineers from Industry will be invited to the meetings, with the status of associate Members.

Scientists from other nations will be invited to the meetings, on the basis of mutual scientific profit.

The European Hypersonics Association was first proposed in July 2000 by its seven founding members, V. Fomin (ITAM Russia), A. Kharitonov (Vice-President, ITAM Russia), A. Roudakov (CIAM Russia), J.P. Taran (President, ONERA France), W. Koschel (DLR Germany), E. Krause (University Aachen Germany) and J. Muylaert (Secretary, ESTEC Netherlands). Currently, EHA membership consists of about 30 scientists and specialists from the leading Research Establishments and Universities of Russia, France, Germany and Italy. New candidate members can apply by sending an application to one of the founding members and making a brief presentation at an EHA meeting of their activities in the field of hypersonic aerodynamics.

The next plenary EHA meeting will be held in July 2002 during the International Conference on Methods of Aerophysical Research (ICMAR’2002) in Novosibirsk.
