Welcome to Onera, the French Aerospace Lab |
News ReleasesFebruary 2007Turbulence and Interactions 2006: Rendez-vous in 2009Turbulence and Interactions 2006, a conference co-organized by Onera, was first held last June. The objective in terms of scientific excellence is achieved and the second conference has been programmed. Onera, the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale of Lausanne, and Pierre and Marie Curie University of Paris organized the first Turbulences & Interactions TI2006 conference on the island of Porquerolles in the French Mediterranean from 29 May to 2 June 2006. This was the first time that so many organizations concerned by the subject met to share their experiences, not in several parallel sessions but in a single full conference. Most of the lecturers were old hands at the Ercoftac conferences, a European community of researchers concerned with flows, turbulence and combustion. The result of this meeting was found to be very positive by the quality and originality of the works presented, which encourages the organizers to program a second conference of Turbulence & Interactions by 2009. The industrial partners found out that they could soon consider the finest turbulent structures in their numerical flow simulation tools used for system design and future aircraft projects. As an example of very advanced simulation, the image below credited to Professor Y. Kaneda of the University of Nagoya illustrates the small scales of turbulence obtained with an "Ultra-DNS" high-resolution direct numerical simulation with 40963 points (nearly 70 billion) performed on the "Earth Simulator" mainframe installed in Japan and mainly used for weather and seismological simulations.
