An Academy of Sciences prize awarded to Laurent Jacquin

On 12 December, the EADS foundation's "Science and Engineering" prize for the application of science to aerospace fields was awarded to Laurent Jacquin, director of Onera's Fundamental and Experimental Aerodynamics department and professor at Polytechnique.

PhotoThe Academy of Sciences awarded this major EADS foundation "Science and Engineering" prize for the application of science to aerospace fields for 2007 to Laurent Jacquin. This Onera researcher and professor at the Ecole polytechnique was rewarded for all of his research work in fluid mechanics for aerodynamics and especially that on the wake vortexes of aircraft.

Laurent Jacquin, who runs Onera's Fundamental and Experimental Aerodynamics department at Meudon, has always been interested in the fundamental aspects of very concrete problems which may come out in nature or technology. What could be more exciting than to be able to understand, then formulate the laws and principles hidden behind observations? What motivates Laurent Jacquin is the marriage between theory and experience.

This research dynamic is at the heart of Onera's activity: researching and increasing knowledge; to solve problems and innovate.

Laurent Jacquin's work especially concerns the effects of rotation and the effects of compressibility on turbulent flows. More recent work has focused on vortexes, research which is motivated in aeronautics by the difficult problem of aircraft wakes. Laurent Jacquin knows how to combine the engineer's desire to find a solution and the researcher's thirst for understanding and knowledge. A not too common attitude that he knows how to pass on and which is a bonus for Onera's international reputation as well as an added value for our industrial customers.
