In September 2010, two SAR1 imaging surveys were successfully carried out in Sweden with Onera's Sethi flying laboratory, one for the detection of targets under vegetation cover, the other one for the evaluation of biomass.

Security - Launch of I2C, a European research project to improve maritime surveillance
The European I2C research project, which aims to develop a comprehensive maritime surveillance system, was launched on October 12th. The goal of this system is to detect in real time, and regardless of the maritime conditions, any suspicious behavior of ships over a large maritime zone.

Onera has just finished the development of the Homer test bench, designed for the implementation and testing of new concepts of wide field adaptive optics and proposed for the Extremely Large Telescope of the ESO. Light aviation - Success of the flight tests for the Anibal "silent" propeller
Onera has recently conducted flight tests for the Anibal* propeller. They confirm the noise reduction predictions of Onera engineers. This great success is a step toward answering a major environmental question: the reduction of light aircraft noise.

Missiles - MBDA and onera extend their cooperation

Space Environment - The MEDET, 7 experiments concerning the degradation of materials in orbit on board the ISS/Columbus

A team of engineers and researchers broke new ground by carrying out advanced diagnostics simultaneously in order to characterize the operation of a low-pollution injection system under operating conditions.

The ESTEC, ESA's RT centre, has entrusted Onera with the characterisation of caesium FEEP thrusters, a type of electric motor manufactured by the Italian company Alta to equip the satellite on the joint Cnes/ESA Microsope mission.

Aerodynamic - 360° PSP used successfully on a Falcon 7X model
In April, a Onera team carried out a "first" in Modane windtunnels by measuring the pressure field on the whole surface of a Falcon 7X with a technique they called "360° PSP".

The first test campaign, funded by Onera equity as part of a research programme on combustion instabilities, was launched in the autumn of 2005 on the MICAEDI bench and lasted until the end of March.

Materials - Nanosims will analyze the dust samples collected by Stardust

Seven French teams working in six CNRS laboratories take part in the first analysis of the samples brought back on Earth on 15 January by the American probe Stardust. Stardust collected grains of dust in an "aerogel" of silica during its flyby of the comet Wild-2 in January 2004, less than 500 km from the core of its head. The NanoAnalyses Laboratory (CNRS/Muséum National of Natural History) will draw up isotopic cartographies of ten grains with a resolution lower than 0,1 micrometers, thanks to the Nanosims probe marketed by the Cameca company. This ionic microprobe, a very particular microscope, is able to recognize each element constituting the material observed. The Nanosims probe is the result of a collaboration between the researchers of Onera's "Materials and Structures" division, Professor George Slodzian's research unit at the Paris-Sud University and the Cameca company. The Nanosims probe has already been installed in great establishments of research like the Washington University in Missouri (US) or the Max Planck Institute in Mainz (Germany).

Metrology - Success of Onera's thin layers gauges
Industrial validation tests confirmed the exceptional temperature performance in of these sensors, intended to instrument the turbine blades in aeronautical engines.

Phase - A new center of excellence in high angular resolution
Onera, the Observatory of Paris, CNRS and the University Paris 7 - Denis Diderot have created the PHASE center of excellence to tender coordinately and more competitively in a field where France has proved to be on the leading edge of scientific research.

Business Development - Onera's RT workshop in Singapore on February 20th

Onera wil take part in the Asian Aerospace Show. Its experts will talk on themes of strategic interest for research and development managers from the industry, universities and research centers of the Asia-Pacific area. The laboratory SONDRA, a successful example of the co-operation between Onera and its Singaporean partner, will be presented. Thales and EADS managers will also testify to their profitable co-operation with Onera. A seminar will also be organized at the University of Singapore on February 28 by Onera's radar department (DEMR), its Singaporean partners NTU, DSO and DSTA, as well as the SONDRA laboratory: WEMA 2006, Workshop on Electromagnetism Modeling and Applications.

Acoustic - Jean-Louis Gobert (Onera/DPRS) becomes the IROQUA Program manager

(initiative of research for aeronautical acoustics optimization). Iroqua, a cooperation program led by Onera, brings together four industrial partners (Airbus, Dassault-Aviation, Eurocopter and SAFFRON SNECMA-Group) and two research institutions (Onera and CNRS). The objective is to contribute to fundamental research in aircraft noise reduction, within the framework of the ACARE's Vision 2020: studies and development related to noise sources (engines, noises of aerodynamic origin, equipment), but also to flight control and traffic (operational procedures and trajectories with less noise). More specifically, Iroqua focuses on :

  • preparation of technological innovations
  • development and validation of numerical models and tools
  • anticipation of the future needs concerning the infrastructures (test, as well as computing facilities)
  • development of common research strategies between partners within national or European frameworks

Measurement - A group of Polytechnique students discovers form memory alloys
Seven Ecole Polytechnique students chose to design a hanger with form memory to avoid ironing tee-shirts, as their scientific project's objective. They were supervised by Onera's form memory alloys specialists.

Measurement - Onera involved in Nanores, an ANR project
The aim of the project, in which Onera is involved with other laboratories as well as manufacturers, is to develop a network of nano-resonators for spectral analysis of broadband vibrations.

Measurement - Thin film sensors and thermal barriers: beginning of the European HEATTOP program
17 partners - turbine manufacturers, small companies and laboratories and research institutes - to study and validate, in real and severe environments, some measurement techniques for applications in gas turbines.

Calcul - Onera increases its computing power

New means of calculation are being installed in Onera's Châtillon center :

  • a vectorial calculator Nec with 4 SX8+ nodes, i.e. 28 processors for 493 Gflops and 448 Goctets of memory, with a 10 Toctets shared disk space
  • a superscalar calculator Bull made up of 14 inter-connected nodes, each one including 16 processors, 1.6 GHz and 64 Go of memory, i.e. a total 1.43 Tflops peak performance, 896 Goctets of main memory and 9 Toctets of shared disk space.

Structural Dynamics - Onera Prepares Structure Tests for Turbomachinery
Onera has just received a turbomachine body, equipped with a great number of accelerometers. The operation began at Snecma within the framework of DYNA (DYNAmic), a research project financed by the French civil aviation agency (DPAC). Snecma, Turbomeca and Onera take part in this project launched in 2004 for a four years duration.

Structural Dynamics - Successful Measurement Campaign for Franco-German Project ABC
Tests on a four-bladed rotor, in the S1Ma wind-tunnel, are just finished. Their purpose was to evaluate the interest of active control surfaces, moving thanks to embarked piezoelectric actuators, in order to reduce the noise and the vibrations generated by the rotor.
