The grants of the L’Oréal-Unesco Foundation, each worth 10,000 euros, are awared to ten students in their third post-graduate year of studies in one of the following disciplines: physics, chemistry and engineering, medical, biological sciences. These awards recognize the quality of their research work and are intended to encourage them to continue with their scientific careers.

Estelle Piot, graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique (2004) and of SupAero (2005) has been working at Onera as a post-graduate since 2005. Her research work, in the Aerodynamic and Energy Models department at Toulouse, deals with the microrugosity of aircraft wings. This work is expected to help in optimizing the air flows around aircraft wings, leading to reductions in fuel consumption.

Onera, foremost French center for aerospace research, maintains a presence of around 230 post-graduates (that is, 15% of its scientific personnel), of which 21% are women. These post-graduates conduct research in their various scientific departments, with the benefit of outsanding test equipment and supervision at the highest possible level. The data collected on their subsequent career paths shows that, once they have their diploma, these students pursue their careers in research and in industry in equal numbers.

Onera is the leading aerospace and defense research & technology organization in France. Created in 1946, it is a state-owned entity reporting to the French Ministry of Defense. Onera has 2,000 employees, deploying their multidisciplinary expertise and an array of test facilities unrivaled in Europe for both public agencies and industry. A proven source of innovation, expertise and long-term vision, Onera has contributed to many of today’s aerospace and defense benchmarks, including Ariane 5, Airbus, Eurocopter helicopters and the Rafale combat aircraft.
