On 30 March 2022, the maiden flight of a scaled version of a single-aisle aircraft, known as the Scaled Flight Demonstrator (SFD), took place.

Bruno Sainjon, Chief Executive Officer of ONERA, visited the Singapore Airshow, held from 15–18 February, at the invitation of Mr Cheong Chee Hoo, CEO of the Singapore National Centre of Defence R&D (DSO).

On 8 February at the École Polytechnique, Bruno Sainjon inaugurated a new cross-disciplinary laboratory dedicated to quantum technologies, called QTech. Involving some thirty researchers at ONERA, this laboratory aims to encourage exchanges, projects and new collaborations.

Riad Haidar has been the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of ONERA since 1 January 2022. He succeeds Stéphane Andrieux, who has taken retirement. This means he is the head of the DSP (Direction scientifique et prospective - Scientific research and forward planning directorate), which includes the General Scientific Directorate (DSG), the CPVA (Centre de Prospective et de Veille Aérospatiales), ONERA's aerospace prospective studies and monitoring centre, and the DST (Direction de l’information scientifique et technique - Scientific and technical information directorate). We look back on his career path in the service of science and education.

The ANIMA project, which focused on providing a holistic response to the issue of noise, discomfort, and associated health impacts, is coming to an end. An open and free conference on the project’s results is organised on Thursday 16 December 2021 in Brussels.

On 21 October 2021, Bruno Sainjon, Chairman and Managing Director of ONERA, was unanimously elected Deputy Chairman of IFAR (International Forum for Aviation Research), which brings together the 26 main global aeronautical research centres.

 Airbus, Dassault Aviation, ONERA, the French Ministry of Transports and Safran have launched the first in-flight study of a single-aisle aircraft running on unblended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
During the flight test over the Toulouse region on 28 October, one CFM LEAP-1A engine of an Airbus A319neo test aircraft operated on 100% SAF. Initial results from the ground and flight tests are expected in 2022.

Space situational awareness is a critical aspect of sovereignty. Adaptive optics and the processing of images developed by ONERA also make a significant contribution to this strategic need. The spectacular performance of the European VLT was achieved by applying these techniques to astronomy. This is specifically true for one of VLT's flagship instruments: SPHERE.
